Before I write a post, I pray for the Lord’s leading not only for “what” to write, but also for the “practice” to have been a reality in my life to share it experientially.
This post has been in operation – in my mind and heart – for some time now, growing in experience and knitting my heart to His!
A.W. Tozer conveys how sin clouds the lenses of our hearts making us unable to see the city of God shining around us.
And because of sin which surrounds us and will live in us and entangles us in the everyday circumstances of life, we have established bad thought habits.
God gave us the gift of five senses to experience life in this world He created for our enjoyment. But His ultimate desire in giving us those perceptions were for knowing Him in a personal and real way. God is a living being
- Present
- Speaking
- Pleading
- Loving
- Working
- Manifesting Himself
Taste (and see that the Lord is good, Psalm 34:8), Smell (All thy garments are fragrant, Psalm 45:8), Hear (My sheep hear My voice, John 10:27), See (…they shall see God, Matthew 5:8)
Autumn or fall, whichever term you use to reference this season that comes after summer and so magically produces a pleasant effect on our feelings, is an apropos time for tasting, smelling, hearing, and seeing! Let me help you envision my love for autumn through the physical senses. I love the taste of everything pumpkin, and the smells of a pumpkin dish baking in the oven not to mention a pumpkin scented candle burning on the candlestick. I love to feel the soft breezes and hear the leaves falling to the ground as they crackle, especially pleasing is the excitement of the grandchildren raking a gathering and then running and jumping in the pile scattering the collection and repeating the process. I love seeing the beautiful array of pumpkins each year from autumn gold to baby boo to fairytale to super moon, and then strategically planning how to ask my husband to financially support my addiction of decorating my porch. 😉 I admire each of my pumpkins positioned in their spot adorning the porch with a company of scarecrows in absolute character owning their space.
All these gifts are given for our enjoyment but when limited to the physical we miss what God ultimately wants to do in and through us. We miss experiencing the spiritual aspect of the senses. Our Loving God’s personality dominates the pages of our Bibles – “walking among the trees of the garden and breathing fragrance over every scene” – exclaims Tozer.
So, my heartfelt plea for this month (September fast) as well as going forward would be to not miss out on the personal experience of knowing God in the spiritual through every season of life and difficult circumstance that He allows for the purpose of drawing me into a deeper level of intimacy with Him.
Warning: there is a prerequisite to “knowing” God – this is only possible for those who are born again in Christ! If you have never placed your faith and trust in Him and Him alone for the forgiveness of your sin, you can do that right now.
