Backing out of the garage assured I can do this adulting thing, I hear Satan’s megaphone, and all my courage flies out the window.
No matter how much healing a person experiences in life, there will always be the world and the flesh and the devil just waiting to take us down! However, you are not weak no matter how many times the adversary comes knocking or blows his horn. The problem is not the problem; the problem becomes a problem when we turn to the wrong source, therein losing our chance to stand and experience a victory.
I can practice my breathing techniques, and I can breathe in the peppermint oil until my nostrils burn but if I’m not turning to the Refuge of my soul, there is no power to extinguish the darts and send the enemy packing.
“God IS our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” –Psalm 46:1
He is never preoccupied, out, missing, or negligent. He IS present IN the trouble!
Ways to run to our Refuge:
- Recite Scripture (Psalm 119:10-11; Ephesians 6:17)
- Appropriate the Christian’s protective clothing (Ephesians 6:10-18)
- Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19)
- Pray (Ephesians 6:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:17)
My phone’s playlist was bellowing through the car’s speakers and at once I found my refuge! Matt Maher was crying “Lord, I Need You.” How ironic! I was certainly in need. And in a very real way, the Lord was VERY present… “My help cometh from the Lord who made heaven and earth.”
Lord I come, I confess
Bowing here, I find my rest
Without You, I fall apart
You’re the one that guides my heartLord, I need You, oh, I need You
Every hour, I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need YouWhere sin runs deep, Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are
And where You are, Lord, I am free
Holiness is Christ in meLord, I need You, oh, I need You
Every hour, I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need YouSo teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand, I’ll fall on You
Jesus, You’re my hope and stayLord, I need You, oh, I need You
Every hour, I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You
You’re my one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need YouMy one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need YouSongwriters: Matt Maher, Daniel Carson, Jesse Pryor Reeves, Kristian Paul Stanfill, Christy L. Nockels.
This song says it all!
When I come humbly, confessing my need He is always, ALWAYS available and willing to provide that refuge, that rest (James 4:7). So much truth resides in this song: WITHOUT HIM, I FALL APART! I need Him guiding my heart. Lord, I need you. EVERY hour I need you. He is my defender (Deuteronomy 20:4; Ephesians 6:10-18) and my righteousness (Isaiah 61:10). No matter how many times I fall, His grace picks me up and reminds me I am His child where grace can always be found and because of His amazing grace, I have been set free to live a life of holiness with Christ living in me! So, Lord, be my teacher; cause me to sing and stand against temptations but if failure comes may I fall forward because YOU are my hope and stay!
“The justified sinner may fall, but he [must not] live contentedly under sin’s rule, because Christ now reigns in him.” –R.C. Sproul
