One Thing Only –

Stranded in the open sea, a man was afloat on a small raft, dying without any water. His weakened and cramping body was about to collapse. His lips were parched. His eyes were seeing spots. His stomach was in knots. There was only one thing he wanted—water.

. . . He wasn’t daydreaming about his many possessions back home. Nor was he fantasizing about the stock market or his favorite sports team. He had only one thing on his mind—water. He had to have water, and until he received it, nothing else mattered. (Holman Old Testament Commentary)

And so it is for us, when some great catastrophe overtakes us, our earthly possessions do not provide any comfort. Only our Heavenly Father fills the deep thirst. James tells us to draw near to our Father –
“And when you draw close to God, God will draw close to you” (4:8).

This may be a time in your life when [your facing] emotional or physical pain. Memorize James 4:8. Draw as close to God as you know how, and you will find He is also drawing close to you. As He does, you will sense His power and have the courage to keep going, carried along in His arms. (A Spectacle of Glory, Joni Eareckson Tada)

Lord, we long for happy endings. We long for reconciled marriages, the return of prodigal children, and the cure for cruel diseases that tear loved ones from us. But many of those happy endings are out of reach. Fill my heart today with thoughts of my eternal home, where there will be no endings at all (Joni). In Jesus Name, Amen.

Wherever you live, let your heart walk the streets of heaven. (Joni)
