Bringing the grandson to feed the ducks at the park is never without hilarity! The storming breeds waddle over to check out what’s on the menu. I slide him down to face the entourage, placing him on the ground in front of me. I cautiously hand him a hamburger bun to distribute. Sadly, as soon as his tiny hand took hold of the bun, a greedy quacker snatched it from his tiny grasp. Re-positioning him standing atop a bench proved to be more successful!
As believers, do we think about where we are standing? Or, even more importantly, how we are standing? Haphazardly? Cautiously? Intentionally? Defiantly? Studying the journey of the Israelites and uncovering some serious downfalls, it’s quite easy to see the waywardness of our stances. Gaining some insight from Exodus 32, the seriousness of sin, and the side we choose to take: where we choose to stand has great implications, as it did for the sons of Israel in Exodus 32:26 (ESV) 26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Who is on the Lord’s side? Come to me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered around him.
If you read further, you will see how important it was to be standing on the right side. And yet, even as believers we can become too sure of ourselves or think we aren’t capable of sinning the way the Israelites did, and during those times we need to review 1 Corinthians 10:12 (ESV) 12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
A Habit to Develop: Taking heed & Standing Firm (Ephesians 6:10-18).
